Microsoft Expands Linguistic Reach: Adds Chhattisgarhi and Manipuri to Translator Service

In a move to enhance linguistic inclusivity, Microsoft has broadened its translator service by incorporating two additional official Indian languages, namely Chhattisgarhi and Manipuri. With these latest additions, Microsoft Translator now spans more than 95% of the Indian population, reinforcing the company’s commitment to democratizing technology and fostering linguistic diversity.

Chhattisgarhi, spoken by approximately 16 million people in the states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, has been included in Microsoft’s language repertoire. Additionally, Manipuri, spoken by around 3 million individuals in Manipur and certain communities in Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, is now part of the tech giant’s translator service.

Microsoft emphasized that its dedication extends beyond language support, aiming to empower the diverse linguistic landscape of India through innovative language technologies and solutions. The company’s Managing Director in India, Rajiv Kumar, stated, “We strive to make a profound impact through our products, leveraging advanced AI technologies that foster social inclusion and collaboration without barriers, contributing to India’s inclusive economic growth.”

The translator service, propelled by deep neural networks and artificial intelligence, focuses on providing natural-sounding translations by capturing nuances and contextual meanings of languages. Microsoft’s ongoing efforts in India align with its recent initiatives, such as training 100,000 Indian developers on the latest AI technologies and tools through programs like AI Odyssey.

This announcement comes within weeks of Microsoft’s commitment to boosting its operations in India. The company reported a significant 39% surge in operating revenue, reaching INR 19,229.4 crore in FY23, indicating its continued focus on the Indian market and technological advancement.
