Micron Technology’s Gujarat Semiconductor Plant: A Game-Changer for India’s Tech Landscape

Micron Technology, a leading U.S. chipmaker, has commenced construction on its state-of-the-art semiconductor testing and packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The company has entered into a partnership with Tata Projects for this ambitious venture, which is set to receive a $2.75-billion investment in its initial phase. In conjunction with this milestone, Micron has initiated the recruitment process for the upcoming facility.

Government Support and Investment

The genesis of this project dates back to June 22, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed an agreement with Micron during his U.S. visit. Over a span of seven years, the semiconductor giant plans to invest $825 million in Gujarat, with the facility being developed in two phases. The total combined investment of $2.75 billion is expected to generate approximately 5,000 direct employment opportunities and create an additional 15,000 community-based jobs over the next five years.

Gursharan Singh, Senior Vice President at Micron Technology, expressed his enthusiasm for the new manufacturing site and emphasized the selection of Tata Projects as the construction partner during the event in Sanand.

Construction Timeline and Government Contributions

The 1.4 million square feet facility, featuring 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, is slated for completion by the end of 2024, with operations expected to commence shortly after. Notably, about 50 percent of the total project cost will be subsidized by the central government, with the state government offering an additional 20 percent in the form of various incentives.

Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility

Micron’s Assembly, Test, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility will be established on a 93-acre expanse within the Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate. Phase-2 of the project, which mirrors Phase-1, is also anticipated, with an identical investment of $825 million. These two phases are expected to generate 5,000 direct job opportunities in Sanand and an additional 15,000 community jobs.

The project encompasses the design and construction of a pioneering DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and NAND (non-volatile flash memory) assembly and testing facility, marking a significant stride in India’s semiconductor manufacturing landscape.

Green and Sustainable Construction

Tata Projects aims to employ modern construction techniques, including integrated EPC delivery through 4D BIM and hybrid modular accelerated construction. The Sanand factory will adhere to LEED Gold Standards set by the Green Building Council and will incorporate advanced water-saving technologies.

A Decadal Opportunity for India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, along with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, were present at the groundbreaking ceremony. They emphasized the project’s significance in India’s journey towards becoming a Semiconductor Nation and a trusted global partner.

Vaishnaw announced plans for a “world-class” train connecting Sanand and Ahmedabad, further enhancing the region’s industrial connectivity.
