Meta Faces Ban on Behavioral Advertising for Facebook and Instagram

Meta, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, has been banned from conducting behavioral advertising on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, in Norway. The ban is a result of the surveillance and profiling of users without their consent. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority has imposed the ban, which will initially be in effect until October.

Starting from August 4, Meta is prohibited from engaging in behavioral advertising for a period of three months, or until it can demonstrate compliance with the law by obtaining users’ consent. Failure to comply with the decision could result in a coercive fine of up to one million NOK ($100,000) per day. However, it is important to note that the ban only applies to users located in Norway.

The Norwegian Data Protection Authority has deemed Meta’s practices illegal and has taken this step to temporarily ban behavioral advertising on Facebook and Instagram within the country. This decision follows a previous ruling by the Irish Data Protection Commission, representing data protection authorities across the European Economic Area, which found Meta guilty of conducting illegal behavioral advertising.
