Maxis Malaysia Embarks on 6 GHz Spectrum Trial to Meet Future Data Needs

In an effort to stay ahead in the dynamic world of telecommunications, Malaysian operator Maxis has taken a significant step by exploring new network technologies. The company is keen on addressing the ever-growing demands for data consumption, driven by rising traffic and evolving user needs.

Malaysia’s Data Consumption Champion

Maxis, one of Malaysia’s prominent telecom operators, underscored the significance of data consumption in the country. Malaysia boasts the highest data consumption levels among Southeast Asian nations and ranks high on the global scale. Maxis’ customers, on average, consume more than 30 GB of data each month, indicating a strong and continuing trend.

6 GHz Spectrum Trial with Universiti Malaya

Maxis has initiated a technical field trial involving the 6 GHz spectrum band in collaboration with Universiti Malaya (UM). The primary objective of this trial is to assess the feasibility of adopting the 6 GHz spectrum to meet the surging mobile traffic demands, particularly in urban environments.

Empowering Students with Insights

This collaborative initiative also serves an educational purpose. UM students gain valuable insights into various aspects of network technology, including network topology, spectrum analysis, system performance evaluation, and the latest spectrum trends. It offers them a real-world understanding of cutting-edge technology and its practical applications.

Impressive Trial Results

During the trial, Maxis achieved peak speeds of 1.28 GHz using an 80 MHz bandwidth, deploying a prototype 6 GHz Active Antenna Unit along with a prototype mobile device. Notably, the results demonstrated impressive indoor penetration capabilities and the ability to deliver speeds exceeding 300 Mbps at distances of over 400 meters from the mobile site.

Enhancing User Experience

Maxis believes that the upper 6 GHz spectrum, coupled with advanced antenna technology, holds the potential to significantly enhance mobile network capabilities and, subsequently, the user experience. This spectrum band can provide robust indoor coverage and performance, making it a valuable addition to augment existing capacity on the 3.5 GHz layer.

Maxis’ Commitment to Innovation

Exploring various aspects of spectrum strength is just one of the ways Maxis is committed to supporting its customers in an ever-evolving telecommunications landscape. As data demands continue to surge, Maxis is poised to embrace innovative solutions to ensure its customers stay connected and receive the best possible service.

Through initiatives like the 6 GHz spectrum trial and its commitment to staying at the forefront of technology, Maxis aims to shape the future of telecommunications in Malaysia, catering to the evolving needs of users.
