India’s Path to Net-Zero: The Decarbonisation India Alliance Takes Center Stage

New Delhi – A significant stride towards environmental sustainability and emissions reduction was made with the official inauguration of the Decarbonisation India Alliance (DIA). The launch took place during the SEEM India Energy Conclave and Awards 2023, led by the Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (SEEM) and various other organizations. This collaborative endeavor brings together industry leaders, energy-efficient product manufacturers, service providers, and policy organizations, all committed to advancing India’s decarbonisation efforts.

DIA’s mission is to accelerate India’s journey towards a low-carbon, resilient future, simultaneously fostering economic growth, innovation, and job creation. This collective effort aims to combat climate change and promote sustainable development principles across sectors.

The alliance comprises SEEM, Asar Social Impact Advisors, Carbon Market Association of India (CMAI), AMOS Group, Sonel, India Blockchain Alliance (IBA), Janitza, as well as NGOs, industries, facilities, and other stakeholders. By pooling resources, knowledge, and expertise, DIA is set to fast-track India’s efforts in reducing its carbon footprint.

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India, highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change. He shared his personal experience of witnessing the effects of climate change in Himachal Pradesh, emphasizing the need for immediate action. Dr. Kumar stressed that climate change is a present reality, and efforts must be made to contribute to global temperature reduction.

At its core, the Decarbonisation India Alliance embodies the imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while embracing sustainable development principles. It unites diverse stakeholders, including industry leaders, manufacturers, and service providers, to promote a comprehensive approach to decarbonisation. Through collaboration and knowledge exchange, the alliance aims to craft innovative solutions, implement best practices, and drive economic expansion.

The DIA offers a platform for stakeholders to contribute to India’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. DIA focuses on several key objectives, including the promotion of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainability; nurturing innovation and technology development; facilitating knowledge exchange; and advocating for policies that incentivize decarbonisation.

R Jayakumar, President of SEEM, described the alliance as a game changer in accelerating India’s journey towards achieving net-zero status. He emphasized that DIA is a comprehensive framework designed to coordinate, collaborate, and catalyze efforts in the direction of decarbonisation.

G Krishnakumar, National General Secretary at SEEM, outlined the SEEM National Action Plan for Decarbonising India. This comprehensive plan encompasses six key domains: Energy Audits, Training and Development, Collaborative Programs, Certifications, Events and Programs, and Studies & Surveys.

The alliance acknowledges the pivotal role played by multiple stakeholders in achieving a low carbon footprint in a diverse country like India. These entities hold significant environmental influence, and their active participation in emission reduction efforts can yield substantial benefits.

Vinuta Gopal, Chief Executive Officer of Asar, emphasized the importance of industries championing the adoption of renewable energy sources, enhancing energy efficiency, and advocating for green technologies. She highlighted the vital role of energy-saving product manufacturers and service providers as climate champions.

The climate crisis, marked by extreme weather events and environmental catastrophes, necessitates comprehensive decarbonisation strategies. Achieving a balance between surging energy demand, socio-economic advancement, and environmental sustainability is a complex challenge that DIA is determined to address.

Priya Pillai, Director at Asar, underscored the interconnectedness of climate action with broader societal issues, including poverty, gender disparities, health, and ecological well-being. She emphasized the need for a holistic decarbonisation strategy that aligns ambitious climate action with resilience-building measures.

The Decarbonisation India Alliance marks a significant step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change and fostering a sustainable, low-carbon future for India.
