Indian Government Implements Restrictions and Licenses, Leading to Potential Price Rise of Imported Laptops
In a recent development, the Indian government has taken a decisive step to impose restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and computers, which could potentially lead to an increase in the cost of imported laptops. Government’s Curbs on Import of Laptops, Tablets, and Computers
On August 3, the Ministry of Commerce issued a notification indicating that the central government had implemented restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers. The notification stated that the import of these items would now be “restricted” and would require a valid license for such imports.

However, it’s important to note that the restrictions do not apply to imports under baggage rules. The government clarified that the exemption from import licensing requirements would apply for up to 20 such items per consignment when used for research and development, testing, benchmarking and evaluation, repair and re-export, and product development purposes. These imported goods should be used solely for the stated purposes and will not be permitted for resale. After serving their intended purpose, the products must either be rendered unusable or re-exported.
