India Soars to New Heights: 71 Airports Set to Redefine the Nation’s Skyline

In a significant move aimed at bolstering air connectivity across the country, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyothiraditya Scindia announced plans for the construction of 71 new airports in addition to the existing 149 airports in India. The announcement came during a ceremony marking the Bhoomi pooja for the new terminal buildings at Rajahmundry airport, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure.

The existing terminal at Rajahmundry airport is undergoing expansion at a cost of Rs 347 crore to accommodate future development requirements. Scindia noted that the number of airports in India has increased from 74 in 2014 to 149, with the addition of 75 new airports in the last nine and a half years. The ambitious plan aims to raise the total number of airports to 220 in the coming years.

The new terminal building at Madhurapudi airport, covering an area of 21,094 square feet, is designed to serve 2,100 passengers during peak hours. With an annual capacity of handling 30 lakh passengers, the facility boasts 28 check-in counters, four arrival enclosures, and 600 parking spaces, earning it a 5-star rating.

Currently, 18 services operate from Madhurapudi airport, a number set to increase to 25 in the near future. Scindia highlighted the development of greenfield airports in Bhogapuram, Delhi, and Mumbai, showcasing the government’s commitment to expanding aviation infrastructure and connectivity.

State leaders, including BJP state president Daggupati Purandheswari and State Minister for Industries Gudivada Amarnath, expressed their support for the historic event, with a shared emphasis on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to nationwide infrastructure development.
