Google Undertakes Major Restructuring, Fitbit Co-founders Exit Amidst Layoffs

In a strategic move to enhance its voice-activated Google Assistant software, Google, an Alphabet-owned company, has initiated a significant round of layoffs, impacting hundreds of employees. The restructuring, confirmed by a Google spokesperson on Wednesday, is designed to integrate newer artificial intelligence technology into Google Assistant, offering users a more advanced and adaptive experience.

As part of this organizational shift, notable departures include Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman, along with other leaders from the Fitbit team, as reported by 9To5Google. The decision to leverage generative AI chatbot Bard is expected to pave the way for a revamped version of Google Assistant that goes beyond voice commands and adapts to users’ preferences while handling personal tasks in innovative ways.

This move follows the large-scale layoffs announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in January 2023, affecting 12,000 employees. Pichai described it as one of the “most difficult decisions for the company.” As of September 2023, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported a workforce of over 180,000 employees.

The restructuring aligns with Google’s broader strategy of shifting augmented reality (AR) work to the Android and hardware teams. The company remains committed to AR initiatives, including enhancements in products like Lens and Maps, as well as collaborations with various product partners.

In conjunction with the layoffs in the voice-activated assistant sector, Google is undergoing significant reorganization within its Devices & Services teams, responsible for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit hardware. The transition involves moving from distinct, independent teams to a functional organization model, streamlining operations and potentially leading to more cohesive products across different form factors.
