Fujitsu Unleashes AI-Driven Power Savings, Boosting Open RAN Efficiency by Over 20%

In a groundbreaking move, Fujitsu has announced a significant leap in Open Radio Access Network (RAN) efficiency by successfully integrating AI-powered power-saving capabilities into its Virtuora Service Management and Orchestration (SMO). The incorporation of the rApp application, leveraging machine learning and AI-driven traffic estimates, has enabled Fujitsu to achieve remarkable power savings of over 20% compared to conventional methods.

Fujitsu’s Virtuora SMO, designed for Open RAN, underwent interoperability tests with RAN equipment in November 2023, showcasing the effectiveness of the innovative power-saving technology. The rApp dynamically adjusts network capacity, optimizing energy consumption based on AI-driven traffic predictions.

Successful Interoperability Tests with VIAVI Solutions: In addition to achieving power savings milestones, Fujitsu successfully conducted interoperability tests with a third-party system-level RAN emulator compliant with O-RAN specifications. These tests utilized VIAVI Solutions’ TeraVM RIC test, a containerized platform that validates Open RAN RIC, xApps, and rApps. The results, announced at the O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest Fall 2023, demonstrated the seamless connection of Fujitsu’s Virtuora SMO with third-party vendors’ RAN equipment, further validating the potential for significant power savings.

Fujitsu’s Commitment to Open RAN Ecosystem: Fujitsu envisions a future where the Open RAN ecosystem is characterized by multi-vendor collaboration. The company plans to play a pivotal role in creating and enhancing this ecosystem, supporting telecom carriers in reducing operational costs and accelerating the development of new services. By embracing innovative power-saving technologies, Fujitsu is dedicated to contributing to carbon-neutral network operations.
