FICCI’s 14th Global Skills Summit Underscores the Vitality of ‘Green Skills’ for the Future

New Delhi, September 21, 2023 – The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) convened its 14th Global Skills Summit in New Delhi from September 20 to 21, with a resounding theme: ‘Building Skills. Empowering Youth. Creating the Future.’ The summit illuminated the escalating significance of ‘green jobs’ spanning various industries and how they are transforming the global employment landscape.

A Paradigm Shift in Green Jobs

Addressing the gathering, Abraham Kumar, President and CEO of ProtaTech Inc., emphasized the profound transformation unfolding in green jobs. These roles now necessitate a unique blend of managerial, technical, and social skills, presenting challenges of accessibility for potential workers. The recently published Global Green Skills Report 2023, highlighted during the event, offers fresh perspectives on green skills and job opportunities, outlining a roadmap to guide the global workforce towards a greener future.

Rising Demand for Green Roles

LinkedIn data reveals a remarkable trend – hiring for green roles has seen consistent growth over the past four years. The platform’s predictive data suggests that this momentum will persist, with an anticipated 8.6% growth rate over the next decade. This projection signifies that businesses spanning diverse sectors in India, such as fashion, beauty, jewelry, and beyond, will increasingly create positions dedicated to sustainability, aligning their operations with eco-friendly practices.

Abraham Kumar further emphasized that green jobs inherently demand higher skill levels, emphasizing the pivotal role of policy interventions in enabling workers to acquire the requisite expertise and enhance their competitiveness. The Indian government has recognized the importance of green skills and sustainability. Consequently, it has implemented numerous skill training programs to expand employment opportunities, with a particular focus on sustainable professions linked to indigenous and heritage craft skills.
