ESR to Develop 60 MW Data Centre in Central Tokyo, Japan

Logistics real estate firm ESR Group has unveiled plans to develop a 60 MW data center in Central Tokyo, Japan. This new site, situated in Ariake, Koto-Ku, marks the fourth data center project for ESR in Japan, complementing three other ongoing developments. Construction for the Ariake site will begin in Q2 2026, with the data center expected to be operational by the end of 2028.

Expansion of Data Center Portfolio

ESR Group’s expansion into Tokyo’s data center market is part of a broader strategy to enhance its digital infrastructure footprint across Asia-Pacific (APAC). “Data centers are a key growth engine for ESR,” the company stated. “Our Ariake development expands our portfolio across Japan and APAC. Our platform has a significant 1.5-gigawatt (GW) data center pipeline in key cities, including Hong Kong, Osaka, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, Mumbai, and Singapore.”

Investment in Digital Infrastructure

The Ariake project is expected to play a transformational role in boosting data center capacity in Central Tokyo, a market noted for its rapid growth and increasing demand for digital infrastructure. ESR Data Centre Fund 1, the group’s data center investment fund, has secured USD 1.35 billion in equity commitments to support digital infrastructure investments.

Sustainable and Modern Solutions

Addressing the need for sustainable and modern data center solutions, ESR emphasized the importance of energy efficiency and modernization. “In Tokyo and Osaka, there is increased demand for modern, energy-efficient data centers to replace aging digital infrastructure,” ESR stated. The company is partnering with operators and hyperscalers to grow its data center portfolio across APAC.

Existing Projects in Japan

In addition to the Ariake site, ESR is currently developing three other data center projects in Japan:

  • Cosmosquare Data Center Campus in Osaka: A 130 MW facility designed to meet the growing digital needs of the Osaka region.
  • Keihanna Data Center Campus in Kyoto: A 100 MW site aimed at bolstering the digital infrastructure in Kyoto.
  • Higashi Kurume Data Center in Tokyo: A 30 MW facility contributing to Tokyo’s data center landscape.

ESR Group’s development of the 60 MW data center in Ariake, Koto-Ku, signifies a substantial commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing data center markets. Through strategic investments and partnerships, ESR is positioning itself as a key player in the APAC region’s digital transformation, offering state-of-the-art, energy-efficient data center solutions to meet the evolving needs of modern businesses.
