Epic Games Under Siege: Hacker Group Mogilevich Claims Massive Data Breach

In another unsettling development for the gaming industry, Epic Games, the creator of the popular game Fortnite, is reportedly the latest victim of a cyber attack. A hacker group named Mogilevich has claimed responsibility for breaching Epic Games’ servers and acquiring a substantial 189 gigabytes of internal data. The hacked information, which includes email addresses, passwords, full names, payment details, source code, and various other data, is allegedly up for sale, with a deadline set for March 4.

According to reports from CyberDaily, Mogilevich has quietly executed the attack on Epic Games, marking yet another instance of ransomware gangs targeting game developers. This follows recent data breaches at Rockstar Games and Insomniac Games.

The hacker group has posted a message on its site, providing a hyperlink for potential buyers or employees of the company interested in purchasing the stolen data. Notably, Mogilevich has not disclosed a fixed sum for the selling price of the data and has not provided any proof-of-hack materials, unlike some previous incidents.

Epic Games has swiftly responded to these claims, issuing an official statement to VGC. The statement asserts that the company is actively investigating the alleged breach and emphasizes that there is currently zero evidence to substantiate the claims made by Mogilevich. The hacker group has not directly contacted Epic Games or provided any proof of the legitimacy of its allegations.

Epic Games further clarified, “The closest thing we have seen to a response is this tweet, where they allegedly ask for $15k and proof of funds to hand over the purported data.”

While other game developers, such as Insomniac Games, have promptly addressed data breaches on their social platforms, Epic Games did not immediately respond to the matter. The incident could potentially impact the company, known for Fortnite and its games store, especially considering its ongoing collaboration with Disney and other industry initiatives.
