Cruise Boom in India: Younger Generations Embrace High-Adrenaline Sailing Adventures

India – In a remarkable shift from global cruising trends, India is witnessing a surge in the popularity of cruise holidays, and it’s not just the older generation opting for this type of vacation. Young India, including Gen Z, millennials, and young working professionals, is displaying a strong appetite for cruises, with over 80 percent expressing their desire to embark on this maritime adventure, according to consumer data from Thomas Cook and SOTC.

This growing enthusiasm for cruises among the younger demographic is attributed to several factors. Firstly, there has been an expansion of cruise offerings in the South/Southeast Asia – Middle East region, offering exciting destinations and itineraries. Secondly, cruise lines are increasingly focusing on providing high-adrenaline activities onboard, catering to the adventurous spirits of young travelers. Lastly, affordability and accessibility to financial models have made cruises more appealing to this demographic.

As per the India Holiday Report 2023 by Thomas Cook India, there has been a 70 percent surge in cruise holidays and sea vacations. The Indian government is also actively working to position India as a global cruise hub by investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure for both ocean and river cruises, further fueling the growth of this segment.

Cruise holidays offer travelers a comprehensive experience with a wide array of dining options and entertainment activities, all without the hassles of multiple check-ins, check-outs, and transfers. Passengers can enjoy a plethora of onboard entertainment, dining choices, and shore excursions, making it an appealing and hassle-free way to explore new destinations.

This surge in demand for cruises is in contrast to the global trend, where cruising is primarily favored by senior citizens. However, the Indian market, with its younger audience, is experiencing a post-pandemic revival in domestic sailings. Companies like Thomas Cook and SOTC have reported over 8,000 customers booking India cruises, such as Cordelia, since travel resumed, making it a top seller.

Additionally, unique river cruise and land packages have been curated specifically for Indian travelers, including Antara cruises from Kolkata, Ganga river cruises like MV Ganga Vilas from Varanasi to the North East, and backwater cruises in Kerala, offering a leisurely experience amidst the tranquility of nature.

The demand for international cruises has also seen a notable increase in the Indian market. Travel companies are offering a range of international cruise options, including short-haul voyages to destinations such as the UAE, Oman, Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong, and mid to long-haul cruises to Europe, encompassing Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, The Canary Islands, and Scandinavia’s fjords. American destinations like Alaskan and Mexican Riviera sailings have also gained popularity among Indian travelers.

Riding the Wave of Youthful Demand

Thomas Cook India and its group company, SOTC Travel, have capitalized on this burgeoning demand by introducing an extensive range of Cruise Holidays. These offerings cater to various segments, including leisure travelers, corporate groups, b-leisure (business and leisure), and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions). The travel landscape in India is evolving rapidly, with cruise operators and booking channels launching new and extensive itineraries and holiday options to meet the diverse preferences of travelers.

The surge in digitization and evolving consumer behavior have played a pivotal role in shaping the travel industry. The increased preference for luxury experiences and higher categories like ocean-view cabins and suites among Indian travelers highlights the growing appetite for premium cruise experiences.

As the cruise market in India continues to gain momentum, partnerships between travel groups, cruise operators, and cruise lines are expected to offer exciting new sailings and experiences in the coming months. These collaborations aim to elevate the cruising experience and invite travelers, across all age groups, to embark on extraordinary sea journeys.
