Countdown to Compliance: BCAS Issues 10-Day Challenge to Major Airlines for Baggage Delivery Precision

In a bid to enhance passenger experience and adhere to Service Quality Requirements, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued a directive to seven major airlines, including Air India, Indigo, Akasa, SpiceJet, Vistara, Air India Express Connect, and Air India Express. The directive mandates the implementation of measures to ensure the delivery of the last baggage within 30 minutes, in line with the Operation, Management, and Delivery Agreement (OMDA).

The BCAS has set a strict deadline for the airlines to implement these measures within 10 days, necessitating compliance by February 26th, 2024. The move comes as part of BCAS’s ongoing monitoring efforts, initiated in January 2024, to assess baggage delivery times at major airports.

Throughout the review exercise, the performance of all airlines has been under close scrutiny on a weekly basis. Although improvements have been noted, the delivery times have yet to meet the stipulated mandates outlined in the OMDA. The existing mandates dictate that the first baggage must arrive at the baggage belt within 10 minutes of the aircraft engine shutting off, with the last bag following suit within 30 minutes.

While the monitoring currently focuses on six major airports, BCAS has emphasized that the airlines must ensure compliance with these mandated levels across all airports where they operate.

This directive underscores the aviation sector’s commitment to enhancing passenger services and maintaining operational standards, with a specific focus on the timely delivery of baggage, a crucial aspect of the overall travel experience.
