CommScope Drives 5G Evolution Indoors with Extended Open RAN Support

CommScope, a global leader in network infrastructure solutions, has announced a significant step in advancing 5G technology indoors. The company is extending its support for Open RAN (Radio Access Network) to include indoor environments, unlocking enhanced flexibility, sustainability, and convergence for 5G coverage. This expansion brings support for third-party Open RAN Distributed Units (O-DUs) to CommScope’s ERA DAS (distributed antenna system), ONECELL small cell, and in-building radios.

Empowering Indoor Networks with Open RAN: CommScope’s latest move marks a crucial industry development in promoting the adoption of Open RAN technology within indoor spaces. While Open RAN has conventionally focused on improving macro and outdoor networks, CommScope is extending these benefits to indoor networks. This extension is designed to offer unparalleled flexibility for delivering on-premises 5G coverage, capacity, and control, catering to both public and private networks.

Benefits Unveiled for Indoor Environments: With native Open RAN interface support for ERA systems, CommScope is expanding its existing interoperability support for third-party solutions. This advancement allows venues to embrace fully digital open 5G connectivity not only for the distributed antenna system (DAS) but also for mobile network operator (MNO) and private network connectivity.

Environmental Impact Reduction and Accelerated Adoption: CommScope’s O-DU support for the ERA platform is anticipated to reduce the environmental footprint associated with traditional DAS deployments by almost 90 percent. For the ONECELL platform, CommScope is extending virtualized open-fronthaul access to accommodate third-party O-DUs. This strategic move empowers mobile network operators (MNOs) to leverage native small cell integration and explore new Open RAN integration options, expediting the adoption of multi-operator 5G services for enterprises.
