Bharti Airtel and Taara Collaborate to Bring Laser Internet Technology to India, Bridging the Digital Divide

Bharti Airtel, a leading global communications solutions provider, has joined forces with Taara to bring high-speed internet access to both rural and urban areas in India. This partnership aims to bridge the digital divide and empower communities by providing reliable connectivity across the country.

Airtel’s Commitment to Technological Advancements Airtel has always been at the forefront of embracing technological advancements, and their recent launch of Airtel 5G Plus on the Kochi water metro route exemplifies their commitment. As part of their extensive 5G expansion plans, Airtel has already rolled out 5G services in more than 3500 cities and towns across India, with a goal to cover every town and key rural area by September 2023.

Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges with Taara While Airtel is making significant strides in deploying 5G technology, there are challenges associated with expanding connectivity across various terrains and locations. These challenges include limitations of cable-based infrastructure and the associated costs. To overcome these barriers and ensure fast and affordable internet access for more people, Airtel has partnered with Taara to deploy wireless optical communication links.

Taara’s Wireless Optical Communication Technology Taara’s wireless optical communication links utilize beams of light to provide high-speed and high-capacity connectivity over long distances. Similar to traditional fiber optic cables, Taara’s technology uses light to transmit data, achieving speeds of up to 20 Gbps. These narrow, invisible beams of light establish a reliable connection between two Taara terminals.

Taara’s technology offers network operators and service providers the flexibility to deploy and redeploy links for various purposes, including extending fiber backhaul, enhancing network resilience, navigating challenging terrains, and establishing high-capacity backbone connections.

Deployment of Taara’s Technology by Airtel The collaboration between Airtel and Taara will see the deployment of Taara’s links across Airtel’s network in both rural and urban areas. This deployment aims to deliver fast and affordable internet access to regions that were previously underserved. It marks the largest deployment of Taara technology in India to date, following successful pilots with Airtel.

Learning from Global Deployments Taara’s wireless optical communication links have proven effective in various deployments worldwide. From rural villages in Andhra Pradesh to bustling cities like Nairobi, Taara’s technology has enabled high-speed connectivity even in remote corners of Fiji and Tonga. These global deployments have provided valuable insights to refine and optimize Taara’s technology, making it a cost-effective solution for expanding connectivity globally.

Driving 5G Expansion and Connectivity Airtel has been a crucial partner for Taara since their initial collaboration in 2019, and this expanded partnership will support Airtel’s ambitious 5G expansion plans. By integrating Taara’s wireless optical communication links into their network, Airtel aims to enhance network resilience, extend fiber backhaul, and provide high-capacity backbone and redundancy paths.

With Taara’s high-speed, long-range technology, Airtel is accelerating its mission of connecting the unconnected and bridging the digital divide in India. This collaboration aligns with Airtel’s vision of providing seamless and affordable internet access to all, regardless of their location or terrain.

Project Taara: Connecting Through Light Beams Taara links offer a cost-effective and easily deployable solution for bringing high-speed connectivity to cities and villages. Google X’s Project Taara aims to provide internet connectivity through light beams, wirelessly transmitting internet at gigabit per second (Gbps) speeds.
