AWS India Faces Leadership Transition: Vaishali Kasture’s Unexpected Resignation

Amazon Web Services (AWS) India and South Asia are facing a leadership transition as Vaishali Kasture, the interim country head for commercial business, has stepped down from her position within seven months of taking over from former president Puneet Chandok. Kasture, who served the global tech giant for about five years, previously held the role of head of top enterprise, mid-market, and global businesses in India and South Asia, as reported by Moneycontrol.

Kasture’s departure comes at a crucial time for AWS as the company is actively working on investing INR 1.056 Lakh Cr ($12.7 Bn) in India by 2030 to enhance and scale up its cloud infrastructure to meet the growing demand. This substantial investment is expected to generate employment opportunities, supporting around 1.32 Lakh full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in various sectors such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications.

Despite Kasture’s significant experience and contributions to AWS, the company has not responded to inquiries from Inc42 at the time of publishing this article. Kasture initially joined AWS as the head of AWS ISV, overseeing an accelerate program for independent software vendors, and held various key positions within the organization.

With a professional journey spanning 25 years, Kasture has previously worked with renowned global organizations, including L&T Financial Services, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, and Infosys.

AWS’s investment in data center infrastructure in India includes operating two data centers in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The company’s financial commitment of $1 Bn in the Mumbai region and $2.7 Bn in Hyderabad is a testament to its dedication to meeting the evolving technological needs of the Indian market.

AWS’s impact on the Indian economy has been significant, contributing more than INR 38,200 Cr ($4.6 Bn) to the GDP between 2016 and 2022. Additionally, the company has been instrumental in supporting approximately 39,500 FTE jobs annually within Indian businesses.

The recent leadership shake-up follows Puneet Chandok’s resignation from AWS in June, who was subsequently hired by Microsoft in August as its corporate vice president for India and South Asia businesses. This dynamic period of changes also saw the departure of Microsoft India’s former president, Anant Maheshwari, in July.
