WordPress Owner Absorbs Beeper, Known for Controversial Workaround to Access Apple’s Messaging Service on Non-iOS Devices
In a significant move within the tech industry, Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, has acquired Beeper, a notable app recognized for its innovative approach to bridging the gap between Android and iOS messaging platforms. This acquisition comes in the wake of Beeper’s headline-grabbing release of Beeper Mini, a controversial solution that enabled iMessage functionality on Android devices.
Beeper Mini garnered attention for its ability to utilize reverse-engineered iMessage protocols, granting Android users access to Apple’s proprietary messaging system. Despite facing pushback from Apple and subsequent blockages of the Beeper Mini app, Beeper’s endeavor was acknowledged within the antitrust filing by the U.S. Department of Justice, highlighting the contentious nature of the cross-platform messaging landscape.
While Automattic has clarified that it does not intend to resurrect Beeper Mini, the acquisition signals a strategic move towards expanding its messaging capabilities. Beeper’s existing platform, which offers a universal chat experience across Android, iOS, and desktop devices, aligns with Automattic’s vision of enhancing communication solutions for users worldwide.
Eric Migicovsky, CEO of Beeper, expressed cautious optimism regarding the future, citing the ongoing legal proceedings involving Apple’s actions against Beeper Mini. As part of the acquisition, Migicovsky assumes the role of Head of Messaging at Automattic, underscoring the company’s commitment to leveraging Beeper’s expertise in advancing its messaging initiatives.
Despite the cessation of Beeper Mini, Beeper itself emerges from beta status, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards providing seamless communication experiences across diverse platforms.
