ASEAN Trade Gains Momentum in Pune with Appointment of Dr. Sachin Madhukar Kate as Trade Commissioner

Pune, 19th August 2023: The India ASEAN Trade Meet, held on the 18th of August at Hotel Sheraton Grand in Pune, marked a significant step in accelerating trade relations between India and ASEAN nations. The event, organized by the Indian ASEAN Trade Council, received robust support from esteemed dignitaries such as Ambassador of Myanmar Moe Kyaw Aung, Ambassador of Laos Bounmy Vanmany, and Honorary Counsel of Myanmar Dr. Ranganathan. The collaboration also saw the participation of Chairman Pushkaraj Enterprises Shailendra Goswami and the Global President of the Indian Economic Trade Organization, Dr. Asif Iqbal.

A key highlight of the event was the commissioning of Dr. Sachin Madhukar Kate as the Trade Commissioner. Dr. Kate’s appointment aims to bolster relations between India and ASEAN by fostering better communication and collaboration. This move aligns with the enduring cultural and historical ties shared by both regions, further strengthened by agreements such as the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AIFTA).

The event witnessed virtual participation from Ambassador of Myanmar Moe Kyaw Aung and Ambassador of Laos Bounmy Vanmany, reflecting the commitment of both nations to enhance bilateral trade and cooperation. An auspicious inauguration also marked the establishment of the India ASEAN Trade Council office in Pune.

Dr. Ranganathan, Honorary Counsel of Myanmar, graced the inaugural ceremony, adding prestige to the occasion. The newly established trade council office is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating trade activities for Indian exporters and companies based in Pune and Maharashtra, as they seek to explore opportunities in ASEAN nations. Exciting prospects lie ahead, with an impending ASEAN delegation visit to Cambodia in September, followed by Singapore in October. In November, a multisectoral delegation from Malaysia is expected to visit Pune, offering the promise of invigorating interactions across diverse sectors.

As the ASEAN Chair for the upcoming year, Laos is set to take the lead, ushering in a new phase of leadership. Simultaneously, Indonesia will continue its role as the incumbent ASEAN Chair, underscoring the collaborative spirit that underpins the dynamics of the region.

Ambassador Bounmy Vanmany of Laos mentioned, “The India ASEAN Trade Council conference held in the beautiful city of Pune will promote and strengthen trade relations between Laos and India to a higher level. It will pave the way for closer connections between the people of our two nations. I express my sincere gratitude for inviting me and wish the India ASEAN Trade Council Conference great success.”

Ambassador Moe Kyaw Aung of Myanmar stated, “The year 2018 marked the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and India. Both countries not only share a long history of friendly relationships and cultural linkages but also have strong economic and commercial ties.”

Dr. Asif Iqbal, President of the Indian Economic Trade Organization, emphasized, “With over 640 million inhabitants, ASEAN represents 8.7% of the world’s total population. The strengthening of geopolitical relations has propelled India-ASEAN economic ties. India’s ‘Act East’ policy aligns with its Indo-Pacific vision. Despite its motto ‘One Vision, One Identity, One Community,’ ASEAN is one of the world’s most culturally diverse regions, open to collaboration with countries that share the same principles.”

Trade Commissioner Dr. Sachin Madhukar Kate highlighted, “As the Trade Commissioner in Pune, I will engage all industries in this enterprising city with a youth population that offers immense scope for businesses in ASEAN countries. Our office will support individuals seeking opportunities in the ASEAN region, organizing activities to educate and foster a conducive business atmosphere. We aim to strengthen India-ASEAN relations through evolved partnerships characterized by friendship and collaboration.”
