Akasa Air Set to Boost Fleet with 150 Boeing Jets in Ambitious Expansion Move

Indian budget airline Akasa Air is reportedly finalizing plans to order approximately 150 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody planes, sources familiar with the matter revealed. The order, expected to be announced during the Wings India aviation event from Jan. 18-21, underscores Akasa’s aggressive approach to tap into the rapid growth of the aviation sector in India.

While contract negotiations are ongoing, sources indicate that the deal is in advanced stages, with details expected to be finalized at the prominent aviation event. The announcement follows Akasa’s existing order for 76 Boeing 737 MAX planes, highlighting the airline’s commitment to expanding its fleet and market presence.

Akasa, the newest entrant in India’s competitive airline landscape, has already secured a 4% market share since commencing operations in 2022. In comparison, industry giants IndiGo and Tata Group airlines command 60% and 26%, respectively. The new order is poised to play a pivotal role in Akasa’s strategy to bolster its domestic and international footprint.

While Akasa’s Chief Commercial Officer, Praveen Iyer, hinted at a significant aircraft order in early 2024, the exact details have remained undisclosed. The upcoming order for 150 planes is anticipated to include options for future purchases, enhancing the airline’s flexibility in adapting to evolving market dynamics.

Focused on both domestic and international expansion, Akasa aims to deploy the newly ordered Boeing planes for flights to neighboring regions such as Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This move aligns with the broader trend among Indian carriers striving to meet the escalating demand for air travel, particularly following the post-COVID surge.

Akasa’s decision to augment its fleet comes at a time when the aviation industry is grappling with production constraints and heightened demand, setting the stage for a strategic move to solidify its position in the fiercely competitive Indian market.

Note: Akasa Air and Boeing have not officially confirmed the order at the time of writing.
