Airbus and CSIR-IIP Forge Partnership for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development in India

In a significant step towards promoting sustainable aviation practices in India, Airbus has joined forces with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP). The collaboration, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to pioneer the development of new technology pathways and facilitate the testing and qualification of indigenous Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the country.

The partnership is aligned with the decarbonization objectives of the Indian aerospace industry, focusing on supporting the production and commercialization of SAF through the application of innovative HEFA (hydrotreated esters and fatty acids) technology pathways. The initiative also emphasizes the utilization of locally sourced feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuel.

Both Airbus and CSIR-IIP will collaborate on various aspects, including technical assessments, approvals, market access strategies, and efforts towards sustainability accreditation for SAF production. The signing of the MoU received active support and guidance from the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Prof Ajay Sood.
