Volkswagen to Launch Affordable Compact EVs Starting at 20,000 Euros by 2027

Volkswagen Group has unveiled exciting news: they have been developing affordable compact electric vehicles (EVs) set to launch in 2027. These new EVs will be priced around 20,000 euros, making electric mobility more accessible to a broader audience.

Ramping Up for Mainstream Appeal

This initiative is part of Volkswagen’s strategic plan to introduce more mainstream electric options, responding to the increasing demand for EVs. The announcement comes amidst a competitive global market where Chinese automakers are rapidly expanding their presence. In China, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles already constitute 50% of car sales, with some EVs priced as low as $5,000.

CEO’s Vision for Widespread Electromobility

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer highlighted the importance of providing appealing vehicles, especially in the entry-level segment, to promote the widespread adoption of electromobility.

“Despite the attractive price, our vehicles will set standards in the entry-level segment in terms of technology, design, quality, and customer experience,” Schafer assured.

New Electric Platform and Upcoming Models

Volkswagen is leveraging a new electric platform already used by premium models from brands like Audi and Porsche. This advanced platform will also underpin the more affordable EVs, ensuring high standards of performance and innovation.

In the affordable range, Volkswagen plans to introduce two compact cars from VW and Cupra, as well as small SUVs from VW and Skoda. These small SUVs are anticipated to be revealed by the end of 2025.

Current Entry-Level Offering

Currently, Volkswagen’s entry-level electric vehicle is the ID.3, which is priced at 40,000 euros. The introduction of new, more affordable models aims to significantly lower the entry barrier for customers, thereby expanding the market for electric vehicles.

Volkswagen’s commitment to producing cost-effective, high-quality electric vehicles is poised to make a substantial impact on the automotive industry, driving forward the transition to sustainable transportation.
