Toyota Set to Launch Ethanol-Powered Toyota Camry with Flex-Fuel Engine in August

Toyota is making strides towards introducing flex-fuel vehicles in the Indian market, with plans to launch the flex-fuel version of the popular Camry sedan in August. The announcement came from Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, during an event held in Nagpur. This move aligns with India’s growing emphasis on transitioning to vehicles powered by 100% ethanol.

A flex-fuel engine is designed to run on various fuel mixtures, including petrol blended with ethanol or methanol, as well as pure ethanol. This technology offers increased fuel versatility and has the potential to reduce emissions. While flex-fuel vehicles are already available in select international markets such as Brazil, the United States, and Canada, their introduction to the Indian market marks an important step forward.

Toyota had previously showcased the flex-fuel Corolla Altis Hybrid in India in October 2022, providing a glimpse of the upcoming offerings. This innovative vehicle combines a 1.8-litre engine generating 101 BHP and 142.2 Nm of torque with a 72 BHP electric motor and a 1.3 kWh battery pack. The integration of these components enhances the car’s overall efficiency and reduces its environmental impact.

The introduction of flex-fuel vehicles brings several advantages to Indian consumers. It offers them greater fuel options, allowing drivers to choose between petrol, ethanol blends, or even pure ethanol based on availability and cost. This increased flexibility contributes to reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuels and promotes a more sustainable transportation sector.

Moreover, the adoption of flex-fuel technology aligns with the Indian government’s push for alternative fuels and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Ethanol, in particular, is a renewable biofuel derived from sources like sugarcane or corn, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional fossil fuels.

The impending launch of the flex-fuel Toyota Camry in August heralds a new era of eco-friendly vehicles in the Indian market. As Toyota takes the lead in introducing flex-fuel technology, other automakers may follow suit, providing even more choices for environmentally conscious consumers. With increased access to flex-fuel vehicles, India can make significant progress towards a greener and more sustainable future.
