Toyota Faces New Setback: 10 Vehicle Models Grounded Amid Certification Irregularities

Japanese automotive giant Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) is grappling with fresh challenges as it announces the suspension of 10 vehicle models following certification irregularities discovered in diesel engines supplied by its partner, Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO).

What Happened: TICO, the supplier in question, notified Toyota of irregularities detected during horsepower output testing for three diesel engine models. The irregularities stemmed from the use of different software on the electronic control units during testing, creating a smoother appearance in horsepower output compared to the software utilized in mass production.

The suspension affects 10 global models, including popular ones like Land Cruiser 300, Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova. A Toyota spokesperson clarified that the suspension is applicable only to vehicles in the pipeline for future production. The models already delivered meet the required engine output standards, posing no safety concerns for their drivers.

Why It Matters: This setback comes on the heels of another recent blow to Toyota’s reputation when its subsidiary, Daihatsu, suspended multiple models due to safety test malpractices. Despite the proximity of the two incidents, a Toyota spokesperson emphasized to Benzinga that the issues at Daihatsu and TICO are distinct.

The automaker is taking proactive measures to address the irregularities promptly and ensure the ongoing safety and quality of its vehicles. Toyota remains committed to transparency and accountability as it navigates through these challenges.
