The Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 SUV: Where Luxury Meets Cutting-Edge Tech

Mercedes-Benz continues to accelerate its presence in the Indian luxury EV market with the introduction of the EQE 500 SUV. Priced at Rs 1.39 crore (ex-showroom), this all-electric SUV aims to redefine the standards of luxury, technology, and performance in its segment. As the third addition to Mercedes-Benz’s EV portfolio in India, following the EQS and EQB, the EQE sets out to elevate the electric vehicle experience for discerning customers. We embarked on a journey through the scenic landscapes of Gulmarg in Kashmir to unravel the secrets of the Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 SUV.

Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 SUV: Performance Unleashed

Behind the wheel, the EQE 500 SUV delivers an exhilarating driving experience. Its dual motors churn out an impressive 402 bhp and a staggering 858 Nm of torque, unleashing formidable power with lightning-fast acceleration. Weighing in at 2.6 tonnes, the EQE boasts an all-wheel-drive system and a substantial 90.6 kWh battery. As we navigated the undulating terrains of Kashmir, the EQE displayed its capability to effortlessly surge ahead. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 kmph, numbers that reflect its performance prowess.

Driving Modes and Dynamics

The EQE offers four distinct drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual. The Individual mode allows drivers to tailor settings to their preferences, creating a personalized driving experience. Even in Sport mode, the EQE prioritizes passenger comfort, with its suspension setup leaning towards a softer, more compliant ride. While this ensures a smooth journey, enthusiasts may yearn for a more engaging and dynamic setup.

Equipped with all-wheel-drive and wide 20-inch 255/45 tires, the EQE instills confidence on gravel-laden roads. Despite its weight, the SUV maintains stability and poise. In corners, its sportier side becomes evident, although it doesn’t quite emulate a sportscar’s agility.

Range and Regeneration

Built on a skateboard platform with a 400V architecture, the EQE boasts an impressive WLTP-rated range of 550 km. In real-world conditions, this translates to approximately 450 km, a commendable figure. Charging the EQE from 10 to 100 percent with an 11 kW AC charger takes 9.5 hours, while a 100 kW DC charger can recharge it from 10 to 80 percent in just over half an hour.

The EQE offers four levels of regeneration: Normal, Strong, No (None), and Intelligent. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel enable drivers to choose between Normal or Strong regeneration on the left lever and No or Intelligent on the right. Intelligent regen intelligently applies brakes based on the terrain, providing a relaxing one-pedal driving experience.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the EQE boasts a quintessential Mercedes-Benz cabin with premium materials, classic design elements, leather upholstery, and wooden panels. The standout feature is undoubtedly the 56-inch hyperscreen dashboard, consisting of a 12.3-inch instrument console, a 17.7-inch OLED touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch OLED front passenger display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six Type C ports, and a 12 Volt socket in the boot enhance connectivity.

The front seats offer opulent luxury, featuring eight massage options and three levels of ventilation. Acoustics are top-notch, courtesy of a 15-speaker 710-watt Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos support. The cabin also boasts ample storage space, including a concealed compartment beneath the center console.

Spacious and Comfortable

The EQE prioritizes passenger comfort and space, particularly for rear-seat occupants. The absence of a transmission tunnel allows three adults to sit comfortably, although longer and more supportive seat squabs could enhance the experience.

Verdict: Luxury Redefined

The Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 SUV is a testament to design and aerodynamic excellence, offering an impressive real-world range of approximately 450 km. Its formidable performance is matched by a 56-inch hyperscreen and an array of safety features, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), a transparent bonnet, and nine airbags. While it comes with a price tag of Rs 1.39 crore, positioning it as more expensive than its rivals, the EQE SUV compensates with an abundance of premium features and a tech-forward approach.
