Suzuki’s Swift Transition: Z-Series Engine to Replace the Iconic K-Series

The much-loved Maruti Swift, known for its peppy performance courtesy of the K12 engine, is on the verge of a transformation. Suzuki is all set to introduce its latest innovation, the Z-Series engine, as a successor to the popular K-Series unit. The Z12 engine is scheduled to make its debut in the next-generation Swift, signaling a shift from the K12, the trusty 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine, to a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder naturally aspirated powerhouse.

While the idea of one less cylinder might sound like a disappointment for enthusiasts, the specifications of this engine are still under wraps. However, expectations are that it will deliver a similar power output while possibly boasting higher torque. The downsizing to three cylinders, each with a 400cc capacity, may result in improved volumetric efficiency and enhanced torque.

Suzuki has set ambitious fuel efficiency targets, which necessitate this downsizing. The new Z12 engine is likely to deviate from the free-revving nature of the K12 motor, focusing instead on robust low-end power, ideal for city driving.

Initially, the Z-Series engine will be represented by the Z12 1.2-liter unit. However, Suzuki’s future plans may involve different engine capacities for various models. Apart from the upcoming Maruti Swift, the Z12 engine is expected to power a range of vehicles, including the Baleno, Fronx, Ignis, and Eeco.

The transition from the beloved K-Series to the Z-Series prompts a crucial question for Indian automotive enthusiasts: Will the newfound efficiency and cost savings of the Z12 compensate for the fun-to-drive nature of the K12, which is adored by many?
