Petrol-Diesel Standstill: Central Government Mulls Changes as Crude Prices Hover

As the nation marks over a year of unchanged petrol and diesel prices, the Central Government has issued a statement hinting at possible revisions if global crude prices remain below the $80 per barrel threshold. Fuel prices for December 22 have been released, maintaining the status quo, but the government’s stance suggests a potential shift in the coming days.

Petrol and Diesel Rates Across Metros

As of December 22, the prices of petrol and diesel in various metropolitan cities stand as follows:

  • Delhi: Petrol – Rs 96.72, Diesel – Rs 89.62
  • Bengaluru: Petrol – Rs 101.94, Diesel – Rs 87.89
  • Lucknow: Petrol – Rs 96.57, Diesel – Rs 89.76
  • Noida: Petrol – Rs 96.79, Diesel – Rs 89.96
  • Gurugram: Petrol – Rs 97.18, Diesel – Rs 90.05
  • Chandigarh: Petrol – Rs 96.20, Diesel – Rs 84.26
  • Patna: Petrol – Rs 107.24, Diesel – Rs 94.04

Government’s Position on Fuel Prices

Despite no changes in domestic fuel prices since May 22, 2022, some states, including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, have witnessed alterations. The central government, however, has maintained consistent rates. The recent statement highlights the government’s condition for a potential increase, linking it to the stability of international crude prices.

Oil Companies and Price Verification

Oil marketing companies such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Indian Oil Corporation of India play a crucial role in releasing the prices of petrol and diesel. Customers can easily access these prices by visiting the companies’ websites or sending an SMS with the designated code to specified numbers. For Indian Oil customers, an SMS with “RSP” sent to 9224992249 reveals the latest prices, while BPCL customers can use the same method by sending an SMS to 9223112222 with “RSP.”
