Manipur Engineering Student Transforms Grandfather’s Vintage Scooter Into Eco-Friendly E-Scooter

In a remarkable feat of engineering ingenuity, Albert Sarangthem, a computer engineering student from Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), has garnered praise for converting his grandfather’s vintage scooter, dating back over five decades, into an eco-friendly electric scooter (e-scooter). His innovative creation, named ‘Samadon EV-II,’ symbolizes a blend of heritage and modern sustainability.

Albert, currently in his fifth semester, had previously undertaken a similar transformation on a motorcycle three years ago, which he named ‘Samadon EV-I.’ Both creations pay homage to ancient Meitei mythology and religion, where ‘Samadon’ signifies a flying winged horse.

The vintage scooter, originally belonging to Albert’s grandfather and ridden in the early 1970s, was abandoned in the family garage after years of use. Determined to breathe new life into the classic vehicle, Albert embarked on the ambitious project of converting it into an e-scooter.

The conversion process involved stripping the scooter of traditional fuel-dependent components, such as the engine and carburetor, and replacing them with a motor, speed controller, battery, and other necessary electric components. Despite facing challenges in sourcing specific motor parts locally, Albert’s resilience and dedication prevailed, culminating in the successful transformation of ‘Samadon EV-II.’

Charging for approximately two and a half hours, the eco-friendly e-scooter can cover a distance of up to 50 kilometres on a single charge. Albert’s innovative project, showcasing a harmonious blend of tradition and technology, has earned him accolades from the Manipur Transport Minister Khashim Vashum and a certificate of appreciation from his institute.

Reflecting on his journey, Albert shared, “I learned the majority of the skills on the internet and a few from a local e-rickshaw workshop.” Despite facing delays due to the challenges in the state, including ongoing violence, Albert’s perseverance has yielded a transformative creation that has captured the attention of social media.

Albert’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the potential of individual innovation and the fusion of technology with heritage, contributing to a sustainable and eco-conscious future.
