Mahindra Recalls Over 1 Lakh XUV 700 and XUV 400 Electric Vehicles Due to Major Engineering Issue

In a startling turn of events, Mahindra, a prominent automotive leader headquartered in Mumbai, has issued a recall for more than 1.10 lakh units of its XUV700 and XUV400 Electric Vehicles (EVs).

Massive Recall of XUV700 and XUV400 EVs

The announcement made by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd on Friday outlines its decision to undertake a proactive inspection and rectification process for its selected XUV range of products due to a significant risk associated with the wiring loom.

According to the company’s exchange filing, this recall is a precautionary measure prompted by the potential risk of an abrasion cut of the wiring loom.

Offering further insights, Mahindra revealed that approximately 1,08,306 units of the XUV700 manufactured between June 8, 2021, and June 28, 2023, as well as 3,560 units of the XUV400 manufactured between February 16, 2023, and June 5, 2023, are affected by this issue.

For the XUV700, the inspection will focus on the “potential risk of abrasion cut of wiring loom,” whereas the XUV400 will be examined for an “ineffective spring return action of the brake potentiometer.”

Steps for Resolution

Mahindra assures the owners of the impacted vehicles that the company will personally reach out to them regarding the recall. The automaker aims to alleviate any concerns by conducting thorough inspections and rectifying the identified issues without any cost to the vehicle owners.

The company’s statement highlights that a total of 1,08,306 units of the XUV700 manufactured between June 8, 2021, and June 28, 2023, will undergo an inspection of the wiring loom routing in the engine bay to mitigate the potential risk of abrasion cut.

Similarly, 3,560 units of the XUV400 vehicles manufactured between February 16, 2023, and June 5, 2023, will be scrutinized for the effectiveness of the spring return action of the brake potentiometer.

Customer-Centric Approach

Mahindra’s decision to conduct comprehensive inspections on its XUV vehicles aligns with its customer-centric approach. The company emphasizes that it is committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers.

Furthermore, Mahindra guarantees that the inspection and subsequent rectification process will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owners. This initiative adheres to the voluntary code on vehicle recall, demonstrating Mahindra’s dedication to maintaining transparency, accountability, and the highest safety standards in the automotive industry.

In a separate development, Mahindra disclosed that it has been penalized with a fine of Rs 14.3 lakh for incorrect input tax credit availed during the transition from the excise regime to the GST regime by erstwhile Mahindra Vehicle Manufacturers Ltd, which has since been merged into the company.
