Indian Offroad Enthusiasts Rejoice: Toyota’s Budget-Friendly Cruiser on the Horizon

The offroad segment in India currently offers limited options, with only the Mahindra Thar, Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and the Force Gurkha available. Among these, the Thar holds the lead. However, there are exciting developments on the horizon as Toyota is reportedly working on a compact off-roader SUV, a miniature version of their renowned Land Cruiser. Expected to hit the Indian market next year, this new SUV is poised to compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar, offering consumers more choices in the off-road adventure category.

Toyota’s New Off-roader SUV

This upcoming SUV from Toyota is creating quite a buzz. It’s expected to be available in both hybrid and electric powertrain options, catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles. This compact cruiser is essentially the production version of the compact cruiser EV concept that Toyota introduced a few years ago. Although the official name is yet to be confirmed, it could potentially go by the monikers “Light Cruiser” or “Yaris Cruiser.”

Design and Competition

The design of the new Toyota SUV is drawing attention for its rugged and robust appearance, inspired by the compact cruiser concept. It features high pillars, a nearly flat roof, and a shape reminiscent of the Corolla Cross. Notably, it will be larger than the 5-door Jimny and will sport a body-on-frame chassis, emphasizing its off-road capabilities.

Features and Specifications

Preliminary details suggest that the new Toyota SUV will measure approximately 4,350 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,880 mm in height. Circular LED headlamps and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate add to its distinctive look. These design elements, along with its anticipated competitive pricing, are expected to make it a compelling option for adventure enthusiasts and SUV buyers in India.

As the Indian off-road segment awaits this exciting addition, the new Toyota SUV could potentially reshape the landscape and provide consumers with a budget-friendly yet capable off-roading option.
