India Takes a Leap into the Future with Approval of Shape-Shifting L2-5 Vehicle Category

In a groundbreaking move toward futuristic transportation solutions, the Indian government has given the go-ahead to a pioneering concept in motor vehicles – the “L2-5” category, seamlessly integrating elements of both two and three-wheelers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently released draft rules to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, signaling approval for this innovative convertible transportation system.

Revolutionizing Vehicle Design

The L2-5 model adopts the familiar structure of a traditional three-wheeler, resembling an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw. Notably, a distinctive feature is the absence of a front wheel. In its place, there is a vacant slot designed to accommodate an e-scooter. The rear wheel of the two-wheeler is elevated off the rickshaw base and seamlessly inserted into the front compartment of the main frame.

The term “Category L2-5” refers to a three-wheeled motor vehicle featuring a two-wheel-three-wheel hybrid module, specifically designed to incorporate a non-self-propelled rear module unit with a two-wheeled vehicle of category L2. These vehicles boast an adaptable structure, allowing users to alternate between two-wheeled and three-wheeled configurations as needed.

Versatile and Sustainable Mobility

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways emphasized the flexibility of L2-5 vehicles, stating, “It can be separated or combined, as and when required; At any point in time, either a two-wheeler of Category L2 or a three-wheeled vehicle of Category L5 can only be used.” This innovation is set to benefit individuals requiring transportation for both personal and commercial purposes, offering a dual-use option with an e-scooter for personal travel and a three-wheeled structure for transporting passengers or goods.

With the approval of the L2-5 category, the government aims to revolutionize the automotive sector while promoting equitable and sustainable mobility solutions. The new classification includes L2-5 M for vehicles designed to transport passengers and L2-5 N for those intended for goods transportation. Notably, both configurations will bear a single registration number.

This move by the government closely follows the recent unveiling of the Surge, a convertible three-wheeler by Hero MotoCorp’s startup. The Surge, built on the L2-5 concept, allows users to switch between modes in just three minutes, showcasing the practical application of this innovative hybrid concept.
