India Welcomes Revolutionary Hydrogen-Powered Car: 1L Price & 650KM Mileage
New Delhi – Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are poised to transform the Indian automotive landscape, offering a clean and efficient alternative to conventional cars. In a nation grappling with air pollution, climate change, and energy security concerns, the adoption of hydrogen as a renewable energy source is gaining momentum. FCEVs hold immense promise, boasting zero emissions, impressive efficiency, extended range, swift refueling, and minimal noise. This article delves into recent developments surrounding the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell cars in India.
Challenges and Opportunities:
India has been actively promoting electric vehicles (EVs) through initiatives like FAME and NEMMP. However, EVs face several challenges, including high costs, battery degradation, limited charging infrastructure, and grid stability issues. In this context, FCEVs can complement EVs and present a compelling solution for eco-friendly mobility in India. Moreover, FCEVs can leverage existing compressed natural gas (CNG) pipelines and stations for hydrogen distribution, offering a convenient option for the country’s infrastructure.
Successful Tests and Collaborations:
In a significant milestone, India conducted successful tests of its first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in 2020, developed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and KPIT. This vehicle utilized a low-temperature PEM fuel cell and achieved an impressive range of 250 kilometers per kilogram of hydrogen.
In 2021, the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways, in collaboration with Toyota Kirloskar Motor and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), launched India’s first hydrogen-powered FCEV project. This initiative seeks to evaluate the performance of the Toyota Mirai, one of the most advanced FCEVs, on Indian roads. Additionally, it aims to raise awareness regarding FCEVs and hydrogen technology in India.
India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Car:
In a symbolic gesture emphasizing the transition to green and renewable energy sources, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari drove India’s first hydrogen-powered car to Parliament in 2023. The government envisions the production of green hydrogen using biomass and renewable energy sources, thereby reducing India’s reliance on imports and fossil fuels. Minister Gadkari also disclosed the government’s intentions to introduce hydrogen-powered buses for the Delhi to Jaipur route, further promoting sustainable mobility.
