FZ V4 DLX: Yamaha’s Real-World Commuter Champion

Yamaha’s FZ series has come a long way since the powerful FZ16, evolving into a commuter-friendly machine with the latest FZ-S FI V4 DLX. Priced at INR 1.29 lakhs, this motorcycle combines practicality, fuel efficiency, and distinctive design. Let’s delve into the details to understand if the electronic features and the new face truly help the FZ V4 stand out in the real world.

Design That Demands Attention

The FZ V4, painted in a vibrant red hue during our test, is hard to miss on the road. Its powerful LED headlight, though not the prettiest, illuminates the path effectively. Designed to appear larger than its dimensions, the FZ V4 features a faux radiator shroud, tank extensions, and a bulbous fuel tank, creating a substantial presence. The motorcycle feels substantial when seated, contributing to its appeal.

Fit and Finish: A Blend of Acceptance and Gaps

While the overall fit and finish of the FZ V4 are acceptable, there are instances of panel gaps and some corrosion, especially in humid conditions. The unpainted black plastic panels, front fender, and subframe cover contribute to the motorcycle’s aesthetics, but variations in climate may affect these components differently.

Performance Metrics: Not the Speed Demon

With a 149cc engine producing 12.4hp and 13.3Nm, the FZ-S V4 prioritizes real-world usability over outright performance. Acceleration to 60kph in 5.4s and a kerb weight of 136kg contribute to decent agility. However, 0-100kph takes a more leisurely 19.47s, emphasizing its commuter-focused nature.

Fuel Efficiency: Commuting’s Best Friend

Where the FZ V4 shines is in its exceptional fuel efficiency, returning 48.7kpl overall during tests. The tractable engine allows for comfortable cruising at lower speeds in higher gears, making it an ideal choice for daily commutes.

Ergonomics and Comfort: A Commuter’s Haven

The FZ V4 prioritizes daily usability with relaxed ergonomics. The nearly upright torso position and comfortable seating accommodate both taller and shorter riders. However, the stiff rear suspension may affect ride comfort, emphasizing the need for a softer setup.

Features and Price: The Balance Challenge

Yamaha’s decision to include a switchable traction control system while omitting rear ABS and a hinged fuel filler cap raises eyebrows. The absence of a gear position indicator on the LCD dash and limited Bluetooth functionality might disappoint some riders. Priced at Rs 1.29 lakh, the FZ-S V4 DLX competes in a segment where rivals offer more competitive features at a similar or lower price point.

Conclusion: A Commuter’s Companion with Caveats

The Yamaha FZ-S V4 DLX caters to the commuter market with practicality, fuel efficiency, and a distinctive design. While it may not excel in top-end performance, its real-world usability and agile handling make it a compelling choice for daily commuting. However, potential buyers may weigh the higher price against comparable offerings in the market.
