Ford Set for Indian Market Return with New EcoSport-Like Model: Mahindra Engine in Tow

“Speculations Abound as Patent Filings Hint at Ford’s Reentry Strategy Amidst Growing Competition”

Ford is poised to make a potential comeback in the Indian automotive arena, with recent reports indicating the company’s intent to launch a new small SUV model. While Ford remains tight-lipped about its plans for reentry into India, patent filings and industry murmurs suggest positive developments may be on the horizon.

Sources suggest that Ford is gearing up to establish 700 touchpoints across the country by the end of 2024, underscoring the company’s ambitious plans for the Indian market. Among the anticipated offerings are revamped models such as the Endeavor SUV and an all-new compact SUV.

The patent images filed in India offer a sneak peek into the design of the forthcoming car, signaling Ford’s strategic move to reestablish its presence in India following the shelving of plans to sell its Chennai plant.

Set to compete in the fiercely contested sub-compact SUV segment, the new Ford model is expected to vie with popular contenders like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hayrider.

Internally, Ford aims to elevate the in-car experience by incorporating premium features such as a prominent infotainment touchscreen display, digital instrument cluster, 360-degree camera, and wireless charging capabilities. Depending on the chosen specification and trim level, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity may also be on offer.

Underpinning the new sub-compact SUV will be Ford’s VX-772 platform, with power likely derived from a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Rumors also suggest the possibility of a diesel powertrain option to cater to varied consumer preferences.

Ford’s departure from the Indian market in 2021, attributed to lackluster sales and substantial financial losses amounting to $2 billion, marked a significant setback. However, the company’s renewed interest in the Indian market signals a strategic pivot and a steadfast resolve to reclaim its position in the competitive landscape.
