Chinese EV Makers Take Center Stage at Bangkok Motor Show, Challenging Japanese Dominance

Zeekr, Xpeng Debut New Models as China Strengthens Presence in Thailand’s Auto Market

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are set to make a splash at the Bangkok International Motor Show this week, signaling a significant shift in Thailand’s automotive landscape. With new launch announcements from companies like Zeekr and Xpeng, China’s EV industry is poised to challenge the longstanding dominance of Japanese auto giants in the country.

Buoyed by robust EV sales, Chinese automakers are gearing up to showcase their latest offerings to Thai consumers at the week-long expo, which opens to the public on Wednesday. Zeekr, a subsidiary of Geely, and state-owned Xpeng Motors are among the prominent names debuting at the Bangkok motor show, highlighting the growing competition in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

At the event, Zeekr unveiled plans to introduce two new EV models in Thailand by June and expand its presence with the opening of ten showrooms across the country this year. Mars Chen, Vice President and Head of Emerging Market at Zeekr, emphasized the company’s focus on the premium segment, positioning itself to compete against established players like BYD and Great Wall Motor.

Meanwhile, Xpeng showcased its cutting-edge technology, including a flying drone car, alongside its lineup of high-end EVs. Elsa Zhang, senior manager for Xpeng’s overseas business, revealed plans to establish five showrooms in Thailand in the coming year, further solidifying the brand’s presence in the region.

The growing influence of Chinese automakers in Thailand extends beyond the showroom floor, with significant investments in local production facilities. With commitments totaling over $1.44 billion, Chinese companies are ramping up efforts to capitalize on Southeast Asia’s burgeoning EV market and challenge the dominance of traditional industry players.
