Audi’s Electric Renaissance: Global EV Sales Surge by 51% in 2023

Audi, the renowned German automaker, has reported a remarkable surge in its global all-electric car sales, reaching a significant milestone with a 51% increase in 2023. As the automotive industry undergoes a paradigm shift towards electrification, Audi’s latest figures indicate a substantial embrace of electric vehicles (EVs) by consumers worldwide.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, Audi witnessed a 20% year-over-year increase in global car sales, totaling 508,600 units. The full-year sales reached an impressive 1,895,240, marking a rebound of 17.4% and reaching the highest level in recent years. Notably, all-electric cars contributed significantly to this success, constituting approximately 10% of Audi’s global sales volume.

In Q4 alone, Audi sold approximately 55,400 all-electric cars, reflecting a 34% increase year-over-year and achieving a record 10.9% share in the brand’s total volume. The Audi Q4 e-tron, based on the MEB platform and a cousin to the Volkswagen ID.4 (and ID.5), played a pivotal role in this surge.

The breakdown of Audi’s BEV sales in Q1-Q4 2023 reveals the following:

  • Audi Q4 e-tron (incl. Sportback): 111,700
  • Audi Q8 e-tron/e-tron (incl. Sportback): 49,000
  • Other models: 17,700

The total BEV sales for the year reached 178,400, accounting for 9.4% of the total volume. Notably, the United States played a significant role, with 25,039 all-electric Audi cars sold in the country, representing a 54% increase year-over-year.

Audi’s electrification journey has been on a steady upward trajectory, with 2023 marking a significant leap compared to the previous year’s global sales of 118,196 all-electric cars, constituting around 7.3% of the brand’s total volume.

Looking ahead, Audi plans to unveil its all-new Audi Q6 e-tron model in the first quarter of 2024, joining the existing Q4 and Q8 e-trons. The Q6 e-tron will be the first model based on the Volkswagen Group’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) system, designed specifically for electric models. In a strategic move, starting in 2026, Audi intends to introduce exclusively all-electric cars to the global market.

As Audi continues to spearhead innovation in the electric vehicle space, the latest sales figures underscore the growing consumer interest and the brand’s commitment to a sustainable and electrified future.
