Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana: Transforming Villages with Comprehensive Benefits

Since its inception in 2014, the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) has made significant strides in transforming rural communities, with 1782 villages having been adopted under its ambit. This initiative has brought about a multitude of benefits for these villages, amplifying their growth and development.

Launched on October 11, 2014, the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana is rooted in Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of an ideal Indian village adapted to the contemporary context. Under this scheme, each Member of Parliament adopts a Gram Panchayat (village council) and takes on the responsibility of overseeing its holistic development, encompassing social and infrastructural aspects. The primary objective is to create model villages, referred to as ‘Adarsh Grams,’ that serve as beacons of progress and efficient governance, setting examples for other Gram Panchayats. Over the past five years, a total of 1782 Gram Panchayats have been adopted through SAGY, marking a significant stride towards rural development.

In Phase-I (2014-16) of SAGY, nine universities conducted assessments for the involved Gram Panchayats. The reports highlighted remarkable improvements attributed to the active guidance provided by Members of Parliament and the proactive involvement of the District Administration. Notable enhancements were observed in areas such as child immunization, strengthening of the Public Distribution System (PDS), enrollment in social security schemes, access to electricity, and the provision of piped water supply in the adopted Gram Panchayats.

To ensure continuous engagement, a bulk SMS service has been implemented to remind stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, of their roles and responsibilities under SAGY. An ‘MP Dashboard’ has been established to assist MPs in monitoring the progress of Gram Panchayats, which is accessible through saanjhi.gov.in/ChoosenReportNew.aspx. This platform enables MPs to track development, reviews, and Mission Antyodaya scores. Furthermore, local feedback mechanisms connect MPs and State officials, including District Collectors, to ensure a streamlined development process.

Workshops conducted by the Ministry have aimed at providing assistance to MPs’ representatives, facilitating the expedited implementation of SAGY. This initiative seeks to empower MPs with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively contribute to the SAGY program.

The information provided is a culmination of the Gram Panchayats adopted under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana within the last five years up to August 3, 2023. This data has been gathered from the respective States and compiled on the SAGY portal.
