Pune’s Agricultural Innovation: App to Revolutionize Dairy Farming and Animal Welfare

Pune, renowned for its agricultural research and innovation, takes a stride into the realm of animal welfare with a pioneering app developed by researchers at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth. The app, designed to alleviate stress in animals, particularly dairy cows, is a groundbreaking move towards ensuring the well-being of livestock.

Led by Dr. Somnath Mane and Dr. Dheeraj Kankhare at the Indigenous Cattle Research cum Training Center, the research team recognized the pressing issue of heat stress affecting dairy cows and buffaloes. To address this concern, the team introduced a mobile application, the first of its kind in the country, centered around the temperature humidity index.

The app provides farmers with valuable insights and real-time guidance based on the temperature and humidity index within the cowshed. This proactive approach allows farmers to take immediate action when stress levels increase, ensuring the well-being of the animals.

Key benefits of the app include generating an index based on the temperature and humidity in the cowshed, offering advice to farmers for stress relief, and activating automatic systems like fans and water spraying when necessary. Furthermore, the app provides guidance on crucial aspects of animal husbandry, including feeding, eating times, and water planning.

Dr. Somnath Mane emphasized the significance of the app in addressing the adverse effects of heat stress, particularly during the summer months. Dairy cows, especially crossbred and exotic breeds, are susceptible to a potential 30% reduction in milk production during periods of heat stress, impacting both the farmers and the livestock.

The app goes beyond conventional methods by installing sensors in the cowshed, relaying essential temperature and humidity information directly to the farmer’s mobile device. This real-time data empowers farmers to make informed decisions and actively participate in ensuring the welfare of their animals.

Dr. Prashant Kumar Patil, Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Phule Agricultural University in Rahuri, acknowledged the app’s potential to reduce the impact of heat-related issues in dairy cows, ultimately contributing to increased milk production and the overall well-being of the livestock.

This innovative step in animal welfare technology showcases Pune’s commitment to agricultural advancements, creating a ripple effect that could transform livestock management practices across the country.
