Kharif Crop Sowing Exceeds 1095 Lakh Hectares: Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Report

New Delhi, September 15, 2023: The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released the progress of area coverage under kharif crops as of September 15, 2023.

Here is an overview of the sowing area (in lakh hectares) for key kharif crops in 2023 compared to the previous year:

1. Rice: The sown area has reached 409.41 lakh hectares, surpassing the 2022 figure of 398.58 lakh hectares.

2. Pulses: The total sowing area for pulses stands at 121.00 lakh hectares, slightly lower than the 2022 figure of 127.57 lakh hectares. This category includes arhar, urdbean, moongbean, kulthi, and other pulses.

  • Arhar: 43.21 lakh hectares
  • Urdbean: 32.25 lakh hectares
  • Moongbean: 31.34 lakh hectares
  • Kulthi: 0.36 lakh hectares
  • Other pulses: 13.83 lakh hectares

3. Shri Anna cum Coarse Cereals: This category encompasses various cereals, with a total sown area of 183.11 lakh hectares, up from 181.48 lakh hectares in 2022.

  • Jowar: 14.22 lakh hectares
  • Bajra: 70.89 lakh hectares
  • Ragi: 8.85 lakh hectares
  • Small millets: 5.48 lakh hectares
  • Maize: 83.67 lakh hectares

4. Oilseeds: The sown area for oilseeds has reached 192.20 lakh hectares, slightly lower than the previous year’s 194.33 lakh hectares.

  • Groundnut: 43.81 lakh hectares
  • Soybean: 125.57 lakh hectares
  • Sunflower: 0.70 lakh hectares
  • Sesamum: 12.14 lakh hectares
  • Niger: 0.69 lakh hectares
  • Castor: 9.20 lakh hectares
  • Other Oilseeds: 0.11 lakh hectares

5. Sugarcane: The area allocated for sugarcane cultivation stands at 59.91 lakh hectares, up from 55.65 lakh hectares in 2022.

6. Jute & Mesta: The sowing area for jute and mesta is 6.58 lakh hectares, slightly lower than the previous year’s 6.98 lakh hectares.

7. Cotton: Cotton cultivation occupies 123.22 lakh hectares, down from 127.29 lakh hectares in 2022.

The total sowing area for kharif crops in 2023 has surpassed 1095.43 lakh hectares, showing positive growth compared to the 1091.87 lakh hectares in 2022. These figures indicate the progress of kharif crop cultivation across various categories, contributing to the nation’s agricultural landscape.
