Surge in Demand for Women Apprentices in the Manufacturing Sector: A Positive Shift towards Diversity and Inclusion

The manufacturing sector, historically dominated by men, is undergoing a transformative change with a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion (D&I). In a heartening development, the demand for women apprentices in the manufacturing industry has witnessed a remarkable threefold increase in the first quarter of this financial year, according to a report released on Thursday. The encouraging trend is evident across various regions in India, reflecting the industry’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for both men and women.

Rising Demand for Women Apprentices

The latest data from TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship reveals a significant surge in the demand for women apprentices, equivalent to a staggering 500 percent rise, during the first quarter of FY24 compared to the previous quarter of FY23. This encouraging trend is observed in different regions, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra (specifically in Aurangabad and Pune), Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

Manufacturers Embracing Gender Neutrality

The report highlights the manufacturing sector’s transition towards gender neutrality in apprentice engagement, with 51 percent of employers actively promoting equal opportunities for both men and women. This shift in mindset and hiring practices indicates a strong commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Key Sectors Driving the Change

The data further identifies the automobile/auto components and electronic/technology products sectors as the key drivers behind this positive shift. These sectors exhibit no compensation disparities, making them more conducive to attracting and retaining women apprentices. Furthermore, industries such as pharmaceuticals, telecom, and white goods are projected to follow suit in the coming months.

Roles in High Demand

The demand for women apprentices extends to various roles, including machine operations, with a particular focus on assembly line operations. This transformation in the hiring landscape reflects the growing importance of women’s participation in the traditionally male-dominated manufacturing sector.

The Path Ahead

Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, commends the manufacturing industry’s commitment to increase diversity hiring to 30-35 percent from the current 20-25 percent in the next 1-2 years. With a rising overall number of apprenticeships, this percentage is poised to naturally grow, resulting in more women contributing to the labor market.

Reinforcing the Workforce

Apprenticeships not only impart technical skills but also foster essential soft skills, such as time management, attention to detail, dependability, and critical thinking. These competencies enhance the workforce’s overall capabilities and contribute to the manufacturing sector’s growth and success.

The surge in demand for women apprentices in the manufacturing sector marks a significant step towards building a more inclusive and diverse workforce. As manufacturers actively embrace gender neutrality and equal opportunities, women are finding greater avenues for professional growth and development. This transformation bodes well for the industry’s future and aligns with India’s commitment to gender parity on a global scale. By continuing to nurture a diverse talent pool and fostering a culture of inclusion, the manufacturing sector paves the way for a more dynamic and vibrant future.
