India’s top-ranked doubles player, Prarthana Thombare, in partnership with Dutch player Arianne Hartono, showcased a dominant performance, securing a place in the doubles semi-finals of the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series Tennis Championships. The unseeded pair secured a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Greek-Aussie combination of Sapfo Sakellaridi / Olivia Tjandramulia. They are now set to face Sohyun Park/ Zhibek Kulambayeva in the upcoming semi-final clash.
In the singles event, local favorite Rutuja Bhosale faced a tough challenge and ultimately bowed out in three sets to eighth seed Katie Volynets. The American emerged victorious with a scoreline of 7-6(8), 2-6, 6-1, securing her second consecutive win against a local player after defeating India No. 1 Ankita Raina in the opening round. Volynets is slated to face South Korea’s Sohyun Park in the next round, who secured a victory against Italy’s Camilla Rosatello in a hard-fought battle.
Moyuka Uchijima also progressed to the last eight with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Hungary’s Dalma Galfi. The Japanese player is now awaiting the winner of the evening session match between India No. 2 Sahaja Yamalapalli and Polina Kudermetova.
